high five offers open lab hours

Big news! We’re offering weekly open Lab Hours for member Community Producers to learn and practice their media-making skills. 

Lab Hours are hosted here at the studio in Avon every Thursday with alternating hours. The first open Lab Hours are Thursday, Feb. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. The following week, Feb. 29, will be from 4 to 8 p.m., March 7 will be 1 to 5 p.m., and so on.

“When we’ve offered Lab Hours in the past, they ended up being a great opportunity for Community Producers to not only grow as storytellers, but to also develop relationships with each other and our staff that ultimately led to stronger videos,” said JK Perry, our executive director.

Additionally, Lab Hours are the perfect time to play with our equipment: professional JVC video camcorders, the Sony a7iii DSLR kit. Equipment expands into software too, with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve for editing, on top of the full Adobe Creative Suite.

As a reminder, we offer membership to all residents and employees of Eagle County. New members are welcome to attend Lab Hours, as well as sign up for video production workshops. The full roster of workshops is designed to equip all participants with the skills and knowledge to produce their own videos - no prior experience necessary.

We believe that everyone has the right to free speech and self-expression. Staff teaches students all the skills they need to tell their story. Lab Hours are designed to allow Community Producers to take advantage of personalized mentorship. Members are also able to make free equipment reservations and bring gear onto field shoots.

After creating a video, Community Producers are able to share their work with the community by submitting to Channel 5, which is available on Comcast from Vail to Wolcott. The Live on Five webstream on highfivemedia.org serves the down-valley community as well as people who aren’t cable subscribers. High Five also promotes producer work on their social media channels for additional community exposure.

Newcomers are always welcome, and should start by becoming a member before attending Lab Hours. Registration is not required for Lab Hours, but is required for any workshops. Membership is limited to Eagle County residents or employees; free for residents of Vail and Avon, $25 for other Eagle County residents, $40 for a family of four and $50 for local nonprofits.
