Looking for a new creative outlet? If you’re excited about “Twisters,” “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” or “Alien: Romulus” this blockbuster season, perhaps filmmaking is for you. And you can become a Community Producer today with High Five Access Media.

As the Vail Valley’s nonprofit community access media center, High Five Access Media provides government, nonprofit and educational coverage of local current events. But we are also known for our free video production workshops.

Workshops are designed to empower new filmmakers to create their own films, TV shows and videos from scratch. No prior experience is necessary to learn on our professional TV cameras, DSLR video cameras, and high-power edit bays.

From there, Community Producers can check out the same gear they learn about, for free, to use on their own projects. They can also gain additional camera experience on High Five volunteer productions, such as Game of the Week covering live high school sports in the valley. Working on a set with other producers allows them to meet other creatives and practice new skills in a low-stress environment with staff available to help.

“Over my last two years with High Five, I have grown in my creativity during volunteering and my own productions,” said Victor Lopez, a junior at Battle Mountain High School who’s taken every workshop we offer. “I have learned all these different techniques to make my thoughts come true with my own style.”

We believe that everyone has the right to free speech and self-expression. Staff teaches participants all the skills they need to tell their story or volunteer. Outside of class time, we provide personalized mentorship and open studio time during Lab Hours, which are held every Thursday, with alternating hours each week between 1 and 5 p.m. and 4 and 8 p.m.
